The summer season in California is dry and mild, with high temperatures of 70 degrees and occasional spikes to 80 degrees. However, the sun’s rays can be very strong in areas of high elevation and hikers should always take precautions to avoid sunburn and dehydration. Avoid sunburns by applying an SPF over 30, wear a hat to shade your face, and bring sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays.
Dehydration is very dangerous and can cause heat cramps, heat stroke, and heat exhaustion. Prepare for your hiking trip by drinking plenty of water during the days before your trip. To avoid dehydration during the hike, plan to consume at least half a liter of water per hour and drink more as the intensity rises. If you are new to hiking, it’s best to start with short trails (under 2 hours) and work your way up to longer hikes.
When choosing what to pack for your summer hiking trip in Yosemite, stick with loose-fitting light-colored clothing. Light-colored clothing will help you stay cool by reflecting the sun’s rays. Some clothes are designed for hiking with open vents, and these are always a good idea. Loose-fitting clothing, preferably with open vents, will help regulate your body temperature and keep you from feeling trapped in your sweat, as some tight clothes might. Pack a lightweight towel or bandana to dunk in cool water and place around your neck if you start to overheat. You’ll feel better in no time.
What to Pack for Your Yosemite Hiking Trip
During the summer, it is wise to avoid hiking during the hottest part of the day, typically from 12 pm to 3 pm. Try your best to get an early morning start or opt for a late afternoon hike. If you must hike during peak-sun hours, wear proper sun protection, rest in shady spots, or take a dip in a nearby stream or lake to cool off. Just make sure you wear plenty of sunscreen if your skin is exposed. Have fun enjoying the gorgeous mountain views!
The top trails for hiking in Yosemite National Park include Vernal Fall, Mirror Lake/Meadow, Half Dome Hike, and The Mist Trail. The easiest path for Vernal Fall begins near the Happy Isle Nature Center, or the Panorama Trail is another great option. Mirror Lake/Meadow is an easy route that is 2 miles long and takes roughly 1-3 hours. Half Dome Hike is the complete opposite and will be a very difficult hike that last 17 miles and will take 10 to 14 hours. The Mist Trail is a happy medium at 3 miles and will take 2-5 hours to complete. All of these hikes offer insane views that you won’t want to forget, so be sure to bring your camera to save the memories!
